Path Finder for OS X
Path Finder 5 is a Finder replacement for OS X, and after only using it for a few hours, I already love it. To be sure, I'm going to use a few more days of the 30 day trial, but there would have to be some serious changes for me to want to get rid of it now.
As I said, it's brand new to me, but ater barely scratching the surface, here are my impressions:
- I like the default layout and look and feel, although I did customise the toolbar. There were some items there I just don't use, and some that I wanted to be there. All in all, I'm happy with the toolbar now.
- The sidebars are fantastic, you can add more, i.e. have a sidebar for my research, a sidebar for drupal coding, a sidebar for websites, and a sidebar for relaxing (movies/music)... that is cool! And in my opinion much better than Docks changing, I hate the delay involved in reloading the dock.
- The drawers all around are very handy. curerntly I'm using mostly on their default setup, so left shows running apps, and subversion info (that's customised). Bottom is terminal, and right is recent docs and folders - I reckon that's the one most likely to be changed, I've never been a user of 'most recent used' lists.
- Having a terminal built in is nice, and it opens to the folder you are currently in. I like that.
- Being able to check subversion from the finder is nice, and commit changes right there too. Less opening up of Versions. Although, I still don't use versioning nearly as much as I should, hopefully this will help change me!
- Split windows, split preview panes (in which you can customise what they display), create a playlist and burn it (using the Drop Stack), find a load of files across your machine and compress and e-mail them quickly and without having to put them in one folder together... and this is just from having it installed for a few hours.
- Check out the Screencast of Path Finder 5 - note, I haven't watched this at the time of writing!
So far, it seems to me it's worth the $39.95.

Re: Path Finder for OS X
Most of the complaints I hear about Macs actually have to do with the Apple Finder, not OS X. Path Finder is great and I recommend it to people all the time.
It seems that updating Path Finder 5 to a minor version like 5.0.1 resets the trial period. I'm a registered user of Path Finder 4, so I'm glad for the extra time to see if the upgrade fee is worth it.
