Commutable Transport?

Lines of Communication are [too] Open?

I've had my Nexus One for a few months now, and it is truly amazing. I can get the answer to any question with a few taps of the screen. It is fantastic. But, do I now have too many lines of communication?

I started thinking about this, and I can be reached via e-mail [I have at least 10 e-mail addresses that I actively check], I can be reached via Skype, I can be reached via a good old fashioned landline telephone, my mobile phone, SMS, twitter, this website, LinkedIn, Weedle, a couple of other websites, and more than likely some others that I have forgotten, like walking up to me and saying hello.

Of those lines of communciation, thanks to my super-awesome-smart-god-phone, the following lines are almost never closed:

  • Mobile Phone
  • Text Message
  • E-mail
  • Twitter
  • Website (a little less direct perhaps)
  • Skype (I do turn this off sometimes)

I didn't even mention IM, which I have several accounts for too. I don't use that one so much, but I do log in to it semi-regularly.

Star Trek Comm BadgeStar Trek Comm Badge - great in principle

I went out last weekend without my phone, for just a few hours. At first I sensed a little worry and panic "What if someone needs me?" That subsided and I started to think about things, rather than be distracted by a vibrating, beeping comm-badge in my pocked every five minutes. I found it most liberating. I plan on taking a few hours every week offline. Not just away from my computer, but away from my phone, computer and TV, I need it for my sanity.
